Is There An Affordable Data Recovery Company?

My hard drive on my laptop went out. there is nothing i can do about it. running it cold did not help. I ordered another drive, but swaping the platter myself is probably not going to work.
There isent alot of curcial data on it. and most of it i have backed up. but there are some things recently that i have done, pictures, a few docs. i cannot afford, nor is the data realy worth paying 300+ for pro data recovery. even at that 300 is not a bad price.
does anyone know of a company that would do it for less?
any tips on swaping the platter myself?http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

Before you go overboard, consider purchasing or borrowing a copy of SpinRite 6.0. It’s a very powerful hard drive recovery program. All you need to do is burn it as a bootable floppy or cd, and it will scan and attempt to recover your data. It can take days to finish if you have a large drive with lots of problems, but it literally brought my 200gb hard drive back from the dead.

300 is a great price, most are in the thousands, if your going to do it your self you need to make sure you put the top platter in the same spot in the new drive! It will most likely not work because the file allocation table could be in different spots on the different drives.
Also you will need a room with NO dust, or any particles in the air, you will also have to where some type of mask or better a full suit
